عن أبي سعيد الخدري رضي الله عنه عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال أيما رجل مسلم لم تكن عنده صدقة فليقل في دعائه اللهم صل على محمد عبدك ورسولك وصل على المؤمنين والمؤمنات والمسلمين والمسلمات فإنها زكاة وقال لا يشبع مؤمن خيرا حتى يكون منتهاه الجنة (صحيح ابن حبان، الرقم: 903، وإسناده حسن كما في مجمع الزوائد، الرقم: ۱۷۲۳۱)
Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri رضي الله عنه reports that Hazrat Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Whichever Muslim does not have anything to give in Sadaqah, he should recite the following Durood in his Dua as it will be a means of him recieving the reward of Sadaqah and it will purify him of sins”.
اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُوْلِكَ وَصَلِّ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَالْمُسْلِمِيْنَ وَالْمُسْلِمَاتِ
O Allah! send durood (i.e shower your mercy) upon Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, Your slave and Rasul, and shower your mercy upon all the mu’mineen and muslimeen, males and females.
Hazrat Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم thereafter said, “A believer continues to be good and is never fully satisfied with the good that he carries out until he finally (passes away on Imaan and) reaches Jannah.”

Commentary
Allaamah Sakhaawi رحمه الله has stated that it is on the strength of this Hadith that Haafiz Ibn Hibbaan رحمه الله titled a chapter in his book to discuss the fact that Durood Shareef can serve as a substitute for Sadaqah when a person cannot afford any Sadaqah.
As for the last part of the above Hadith stating that the belly of a Mu’min can never be filled with good, the author of Mishkaatul Masaabeeh has quoted it in the virtues of knowledge. Even the author of Mirqaat has explained that the word ‘good’ refers to the knowledge of Deen. The word is nevertheless general and includes all forms of good. The meaning is quite clear that a Mu’min is never satisfied with doing good and will leave no stone unturned to increase his good deeds. If he does not have the wealth to give Sadaqah, he will then send Durood Shareef upon Rasulullah to earn the rewards of Sadaqah. In my humble opinion, the word should be left general, so as to include the knowledge of Deen as well as other good deeds.
The author of Mazaahir-e-Haqq agrees with the author of Mirqaat and others who say that the term “Khair” (Good) refers to the knowledge of Deen. That is why he writes, “Because the Mu’min continues to seek the knowledge of Deen until he passes away and is granted entry into Jannah. This Hadith therefore grants glad tidings to the students of Deen, telling them that by the blessings of this knowledge they will Insha Allah reach Jannah. It is with the aim of reaching this status that many Awliyaa continue in their quest of Deeni knowledge until they leave this world, even though they may be extremely learned and despite being always busy with teaching and writing.

يَا رَبِّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ دَائِمَاً أَبَدًا عَلَىْ حَبِيْبِكَ خَيْرِ الْخَلْقِ كُلِّهِمِ
“O Sustainer, shower Salaat and Salaam forever and ever upon Your beloved, who is the best of all creation.”
جَزَی اللہُ عَنَّا نَبِيَّنَا مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّی اللہُ عَلَیْه وسَلَّمَ بِمَا هُوَ أَھْلُهُ
May Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله reward our Nabi Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم on our behalf such a reward that is due to Him.
